From Dependence to Independence: The Impact of Youth Work in Poplar

SPLASH Youth in Poplar

SPLASH Youth marks the beginning of change. Located near Blackwall covering the Poplar area, SPLASH serves as an oasis for the local teens where they can safe after school and, in addition, work toward building their self esteem and life skills. More than an ‘after school care’ center, SPLASH seeks to empower the youth to help them effectively navigate through their teenage years and emerge as empowered adults.

Facing the problems of a metropolitan city comes with a unique set of challenges for teens in Poplar, but the relentless efforts put by SPLASH Poplar ensures that the youth are provided with the right support and community.

Why Youth Participation in Community Programmes Matters

Involving young people in community programmes is not just beneficial—it is essential for their personal development and for building stronger, more inclusive communities. According to the UCL Evidence-Based Practice Unit’s briefing on youth participation, when young people are actively engaged in shaping the services and environments around them, they experience increased confidence, a stronger sense of identity, and improved mental wellbeing. Participation empowers them to feel valued and heard, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. It also helps build critical life skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership, which are foundational for success in adulthood. Importantly, meaningful participation encourages young people to become active citizens, invested in the wellbeing of their communities and equipped to contribute positively to society. These outcomes highlight why organisations like SPLASH Youth play such a vital role—they create opportunities where youth can move from the margins to the centre of decision-making, becoming agents of their own growth and change.

The Role of Youth Work

Oftentimes ignored, adolescent issues are critical at this age. Having an appropriate and safe place to exercise their creativity as SPLASH provides comes in handy, offloading the life changing resources helps redefining the identity. With the help of programs structured by SPLASH Youth, the team tries to change and reinforce the mindset in Poplar from reliance to responsibility through active engagement instead of top down authority.

Leadership programs, and discussions along with sports like football and basketball work towards increasing self discipline. Resilience and independence is core to every activity provided for the users.

💬 Would you like to contribute to this change? By donating to SPLASH Youth, you can help more young people access these critical opportunities. Every effort aids in the continuation of programs, equipment, and mentorships.

Poplar SPLASH: Convivial and Developmental Activities

What sets SPLASH Poplar apart is their relational approach. The staff and volunteers personally engage with each young person. They don’t merely run sessions; they listen, offer guidance, and help.

I used to just hang out and not really think about the future. After joining SPLASH Youth, I completed leadership training and now help younger kids in sessions. It’s changed my whole mindset.” Poplar participant, 17

These accounts are commonplace. Every week at SPLASH Youth, dozens of young people embrace new opportunities and roles, unlocking their potential and actively participating in the local community.

Equipping Youth for Future Endeavors

SPLASH Youth’s aims are much broader than merely engaging learners. It equips them for life. SPLASH Youth strategically prioritizes and funds certified training courses, sports leadership roles, as well as sustained positive youth engagement in Poplar.

Rather than simply pursuing autonomy, this endeavor enables them the freedom to be empowered.

Empowering Youth Participation Through Proven Models

SPLASH Youth’s approach to empowerment aligns closely with evidence-based models of youth participation. Drawing inspiration from frameworks such as Hart’s Ladder of Participation and Shier’s Pathways to Participation, SPLASH ensures that young people in Poplar are not just passive recipients of services, but active contributors to their community. These models emphasize shared decision-making, ownership, and age-appropriate involvement, which SPLASH integrates through leadership training, peer mentoring, and community-led initiatives. By treating young people as partners rather than problems to be solved, SPLASH mirrors best practices in youth engagement—fostering resilience, self-worth, and real-world skills. This participatory ethos strengthens each program, ensuring that SPLASH Youth is not only a sanctuary, but also a launchpad for young leaders in East London.

This summary draws on insights from the UCL Evidence-Based Practice Unit’s briefing on youth participation models, developed as part of the HeadStart programme funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.

Why Poplar Needs SPLASH

Accessibile youth work is needed now more than ever in a place like Poplar with the coexistence eurocentric regeneration schemes and sparsely populated areas of lower socio-economic activity. SPLASH Poplar is not only providing much needed services to the increase in adolescent and teenage population, but also provides vital infrastructure to enable future achievements.

SPLASH Youth is transforming a generation—one football game, one mentoring meeting, and one achievement at a time. For the youth of Poplar, it is not only a site that they can visit to spend time in; it is an opportunity for personal development, learning, and constructive life skills for a better tomorrow.
